MAINTENANCE
 

Annual maintenance is critical to ensure the free flow of water. The Boards’ annual summer maintenance programmes commence in July each year to remove vegetation from Board maintained watercourses.  To avoid disturbing nesting sites, Environmental legislation precludes us from undertaking this work before 15th July, however, when weather conditions are such that there is an increased amount of weedgrowth early in the year and water levels are high, the Boards undertake work to clear the centre of the channel on those watercourses protecting urban areas to maintain the flow of water and ensure that properties are protected.

 

Reforming is undertaken during the winter and involves re-profiling of the watercourse banks and removal of silt from the bed of the watercourse to return it to its original design storage capacity.

 

Unforeseen circumstances such as bank slips and culvert collapse are dealt with swiftly as they occur to ensure the free flow of water in the Boards’ systems.

RENEWAL AND REFURBISHMENT
 

A preventative maintenance approach is taken by the Boards on all major assets to ensure their reliability, however, there is always a risk of unforeseen breakdowns occurring and we are able to respond rapidly returning systems to a normal level of service as soon as possible. 

 

CCTV inspections and de-silting works are carried out on culverted (piped) watercourses to ensure that they are in good condition and to identify any works that may be necessary to return them to the correct operational condition.

ENVIRONMENTAL

All our work is undertaken in a sympathetic manner in accordance with environmental legislation and the Boards’ staff work closely with various environment bodies including the Wildlife Trusts, Greater Lincolnshire Nature Partnership and catchment partnerships.  Wildlife sightings in our watercourses demonstrate that systems can be well maintained without adversely affecting the environment.
